The findings of the Independent Panel examining the Nigeria Correctional Service have brought to light essential reforms necessary to fortify the nation’s correctional framework, placing significant importance on digitisation and staff welfare.
This became the central topic of conversations on Good Morning Nigeria, a premier programme on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), where members of the panel participated as guests.
A member of the panel, Dr. Ikechukwu Ezeugo, underscored the pressing necessity to digitise inmate documentation across correctional centres nationwide, defining it as a crucial measure for modernising the framework.
“The implementation of digital record-keeping will greatly improve efficiency, enhance data management, and bolster transparency within our correctional centres,” he remarked.
Ezeugo pointed out that the existing manual procedures lead to delays, inconsistencies in data, and a lack of accountability, issues he claimed could be mitigated through a centralised digital platform.
In addition, the chairperson of the panel, Dr. Magdalene Ajana, urged for prompt enhancements in the welfare and working conditions of correctional staff.
“Tackling the welfare issues of correctional personnel is not solely about staff well-being; it is essential for uplifting morale and improving service delivery across establishments,” she asserted.
Ajana highlighted that increased pay, enhanced working conditions, and access to necessary resources would enable personnel to carry out their responsibilities more effectively.
The panel’s conclusions, as elaborated during the programme, highlight a twofold reform strategy, utilizing technology to boost operational effectiveness while investing in human resources to ensure a more responsive and efficient correctional system.
