“Buhari’s Passing: A Surprising Turn in the South-East Herdsmen Conflict, Claims Ohanaeze Ndigbo”

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has proclaimed that since the departure of former President Muhammadu Buhari from office and following his passing in 2025, the South-East region has not experienced any occurrences of Fulani herdsmen assaults.

Ohanaeze indicated that the unexpected and significant reduction in the actions of presumed Fulani herdsmen militias in the South-East is nothing less than a miracle, which has furnished irrefutable evidence that these factions were, most likely, a state-backed terrorist arm during the governance of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, dispatched with the nefarious aim of destabilizing Southern Nigeria, particularly the South-East.

It emphasized that for over six protracted and distressing years, these so-called Fulani herdsmen militias unleashed a campaign of terror in the South-East, recklessly obliterating farmlands and converting the fertile soil of the Igbo heartland into desolate grounds.

As per the pan-Igbo collective, they occupied woodlands, utilizing them as strongholds for their vile acts, and mercilessly pillaged numerous villages, leaving a path of devastation, sorrow, and displacement in their wake.

In a statement released on Sunday by the factional Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and Chief Thompson Ohia, National Spokesperson, Ohanaeze expressed that the human toll of this terror is immeasurable, with over 2,960 innocent Igbos perishing and many others sustaining injuries.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo recognizes the essential roles played by the Federal Government and the South-East governors in addressing the security issues that plagued the region.

“Nevertheless, it cannot be overlooked that the most pivotal factor in ceasing this reign of terror was the demise of former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2025. Right after his death, there was a noticeable and profound decline in the activities of the Fulani herdsmen militia.

“This undeniable chain of events has reaffirmed the long-held suspicions of the Igbo populace that these militias were state-funded during Buhari’s tenure.

“The ‘Fulanization Agenda’ endorsed during Buhari’s administration (2015–2023) was a clear illustration of a biased and divisive policy that eroded the trust and faith of Ndigbo in the APC-led Federal Government.

“The Igbo community endured immense hardship during this era, with their safety and livelihoods perpetually at risk.

“Fortunately, the current APC-led Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has undertaken commendable initiatives to restore the confidence of the Igbo people.

“There has been a notable enhancement in security throughout the region. The Igbo can now rest more peacefully at night, liberated from the perpetual fear of assault that had become an unwelcome norm for far too long.

“President Tinubu’s administration has played a crucial role in transforming the once-grim infrastructure deficits of the South-East into a hopeful landscape of growth and access.

“The advancement in road systems and other fundamental infrastructure projects is a testament to his dedication to the region.

“As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marks his 74th birthday, Ohanaeze Ndigbo wishes to take this moment to convey heartfelt birthday greetings and express our profound appreciation.”

The organization remarked that Ndigbo remains indebted to him for engendering the much-needed transformation in the South-East, converting a region plagued by insecurity and underdevelopment into a secure and flourishing area.
