“After the Jos Palm Sunday Tragedy: Nigerian Government Unveils Response Strategy”

The Federal Government has articulated its deep apprehension regarding the unfortunate occurrence that transpired in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North on Palm Sunday.

The administration expressed its condolences to the families of the casualties, as well as to the Government and populace of Plateau State.

“On behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government of Nigeria, I convey our heartfelt sympathies to the families of the casualties and to the Government and citizens of Plateau State,” stated the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.

“I wish to reassure Nigerians that security forces acted promptly in reaction to the incident. Troops under Operation Enduring Peace were quickly dispatched to the site following urgent communications.

“The military and other security personnel secured the impacted region, established control over key access pathways, and commenced focused search-and-clear operations to detain the offenders.

“These swift actions ensured that the situation was managed rapidly and prevented any further escalation,” the Minister noted.

The Minister indicated that this response is part of a comprehensive and ongoing Federal Government security strategy in Plateau State and the wider North-Central region.

He added that the Nigerian Armed Forces have been actively executing clearance operations and intelligence-led missions in at-risk communities following recent assaults.

“Increased surveillance and troop deployments have also been implemented in high-risk locations, enhanced by joint military-police patrols and refined rapid response strategies. These coordinated efforts aim to proactively neutralize threats and maintain stability,” he mentioned.

“Just a few hours prior, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, convened a high-level meeting with the nation’s prominent security and intelligence leaders to evaluate the situation and decide on further decisive measures towards achieving a lasting resolution. Following this meeting, President Tinubu has invited the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, to participate in additional discussions and formulate a coordinated strategy for lasting peace and security,” he noted.

“These initiatives underscore the seriousness with which the Federal Government is tackling this matter and its steadfast commitment to ensuring that all necessary actions are executed promptly and effectively.

“The Plateau State Government has also implemented decisive and supportive actions in conjunction with federal agencies. A 48-hour curfew was mandated in Jos North immediately following the incident to stabilize the security climate and support ongoing operations. The state government continues to work closely with security forces to prevent reprisals, restore peace, and facilitate investigations.

“Plateau State has historically grappled with localized security issues related to communal strife and criminal behaviors. The recent events do not signify a breakdown of national security, but rather a criminal incident within a recognized conflict-prone area—one that is being actively and diligently addressed by the authorities.

“The Federal Government has directed all security agencies to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are identified, captured, and brought to justice.

“There will be no sanctuary for criminal elements anywhere in Nigeria. Ongoing operations are already yielding actionable intelligence, and we are optimistic that those accountable for this attack will face justice.”
