The Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has apprehended two individuals for purportedly deceiving unsuspecting job aspirants out of ₦2.9 million.
Bolaji Kazeem Akinwunmi, commonly referred to as “Bolaji Original,” was taken into custody alongside his partner and former girlfriend, Kemisola Mary Akinbo, who hails from Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State.
As per a statement from the anti-corruption agency in Ilorin on Tuesday, “investigations disclosed that Akinwunmi impersonated an official of the Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigeria Immigration Service, falsely asserting he had access to job vacancies for prospective candidates.”
“The suspect allegedly marketed the nonexistent job positions to victims at prices ranging from ₦40,000 to ₦45,000. He reportedly focused on young job seekers, obtaining payments under the pretense of facilitating recruitment into federal agencies.”
Further investigations, according to the anti-corruption agency, indicated that, in an effort to escape detection, Akinwunmi refrained from receiving the earnings of the fraudulent operation through his own accounts.
“Instead, he purportedly utilized Akinbo’s bank account, his former partner, to gather payments from victims. Transactions linked to the account revealed multiple deposits amounting to millions of naira, with descriptions associated with job placements.”
In her testimony, Akinbo revealed that she became involved with Akinwunmi in September 2023 and subsequently relocated to live with him in Akure, Ondo State.
She stated that he initially presented himself to her as a police officer but later assumed the identity of a recruitment officer to swindle members of the public. She further acknowledged that numerous payments were deposited into her account at his behest.
Akinwunmi, in his own account, reportedly admitted to receiving a total amount of ₦2,921,700 from the fraudulent endeavors.
The suspects will face charges in court once the ongoing investigations are complete, the statement concluded.
