“Lagos APC Dismisses Kwankwaso’s Defection as Overblown Political Theatre”

The Lagos State faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded to the reported change of allegiance of former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

It characterized the action as exaggerated and motivated by personal aspirations rather than national concern.

In a communiqué issued by its spokesperson, Hon. Seye Oladejo, the party conveyed doubts about efforts to depict the occurrence as a significant political realignment, asserting that a detailed examination indicates otherwise.

The Lagos APC contended that Kwankwaso’s choice to transition between parties is linked to his longstanding quest for a presidential or vice-presidential nomination, labeling the action as a calculated attempt to further personal political objectives.

According to the party, the defection does not signify ideological congruence or a commitment to governance, but is instead a strategic decision rooted in self-interest.

The statement also challenged the vigor of the Kwankwasiyya movement, alleging that it has diminished over time due to the departure of key players, including notable political personas in Kano State.

It posited that the supposed influence of the former governor has been inflated, adding that political significance ought to be gauged by the capacity to maintain alliances, foster trust, and yield outcomes.

The APC faction reaffirmed its dedication to what it terms disciplined and principle-based politics, dismissing what it describes as opportunistic defections and self-serving political maneuvers.

It further asserted that Nigerians merit leadership centered on national development rather than individual aspirations, cautioning that such political maneuvers could divert attention from governance priorities.

The statement concluded that Kwankwaso’s defection should not be perceived as a substantial acquisition, but rather as a situation that raises inquiries regarding the motivations behind political realignments.

The statement articulates: “While some are keen to illustrate this action as a dramatic political reconfiguration, a thorough analysis uncovers a narrative propelled more by ego than by principles.

“Senator Kwankwaso has consistently asserted that any shift on his part must secure him a Presidential or Vice Presidential nomination.

“This defection, therefore, is less a sincere dedication to national interest or ideological coherence, and more a calculated endeavor in self-promotion. It is a political exchange intended to fulfill personal ambitions, not to enhance meaningful governance or benefit the Nigerian populace.

“Furthermore, the celebrated Kwankwasiyya movement, frequently depicted as a powerful grassroots entity, has long been in disarray. Its forsaking by crucial stakeholders, including the Kano State Governor and other prominent figures, has revealed its internal frailty and diminishing relevance.

“A leader whose so-called movement cannot retain its foundational supporters is hardly the national game-changer that some would have Nigerians believe.

“It is becoming increasingly evident that Senator Kwankwaso’s political clout has been overstated. What is being portrayed as a strategic realignment is, in truth, an ego-driven, opportunistic maneuver.

“It serves as a reminder that political prominence is not gauged by name recognition or former positions, but by the ability to maintain alliances, inspire trust, and deliver positive outcomes.”
