
The Action Peoples Party, APP, has designated state officials to steer the organization in preparation for the 2028 Imo State off-cycle gubernatorial election.
The state congress was held through consensus with the presence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), occurring at the party’s headquarters, MCC Uratta Road in Owerri on Sunday.
The events began with the ward congress on April 22nd, leading to local government and zonal elections of officials on April 24th, and concluded with the election of members of the State Working Committee.
The congress featured party leaders, executives, stakeholders, ward-elected officials, and local government delegates from the three senatorial zones of the state, enhancing the celebration of the party’s democratic progression and strengthening APP’s internal structure.
Ernest Njesi, former interim caretaker committee chairman, was resoundingly re-elected and reinstated as the party’s leader. Other members of the SWC elected with the chairman included Barr. Ogemdi Ezemonye, Engr. Henry Alaribe, and Hon. Ernest Ezirim, who became deputy chairmen for Orlu, Owerri, and Okigwe zones respectively, while Engr. Emeka Onwukwe and Hon. Chief Uju Ugochukwu were appointed as the principal state secretary and deputy state secretary of the party.
Among those elected at the congress were Barr. Dr. Uche Nwosu, state legal adviser, with Barr. Casmir Anyanwu serving as deputy state legal adviser. The roles of state financial secretary and deputy were assigned to Chief Sylvester Durukwuaku and Hon. Eddy Nwosu. Amb. Steve Nnadi was appointed as the state publicity secretary, with Hon. Wisdom Echefu as his deputy.
The position of state youth leader was awarded to Comrade Isidore Chukwuemeka, assisted by Hon. Chinonye Ezuruike as deputy.
Mrs. Stella Nneka Chukwu and Mrs. May Obiyo were appointed as woman leader and deputy, respectively.
The previous House of Assembly member from Ihitte Uboma State Constituency, Hon. Michael Onyemachi, secured the post of organizing secretary of the party, with Hon. JohnPaul Onuoha as his deputy, while Hon. Peter Etoh was appointed as the state treasurer. The party auditor duly elected and sworn in was Dr. Brent Akomas.
To commence immediately after taking the oath of office, the state chairman, Hon. Ernest Njesi, in his acceptance remarks following the election, urged party members to intensify their endeavors to advance the party, while encouraging all loyalists to remain dedicated and resolute to the party’s principles to make it a competitive force and the leading party in the state.
During the event, the congress committee led by Okenze Blyden Amajirionwu praised the members for the smooth conduct of the event, ensuring transparency and credibility, which was observed by representatives from the Independent National Electoral Commission headed by the Electoral Party Monitoring (EPM), Dr. Nneka Iluogu, along with security agencies who upheld order and civility throughout the tranquil proceedings.
Urging the newly elected State Working Committee members at the congress and other party officials, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, representing Ideato North/South Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, encouraged them to engage in vigorous grassroots awareness and mobilization of voters.
He remarked that APP has maintained its status as the foremost opposition party in the state, supported by two effective House of Representatives members.
The caucus leader urged all party loyalists to unite and maintain solidarity, cohesion, and strategic interaction with the populace, which will facilitate electoral success in the upcoming elections.
Similarly, Hon. Chief Henry Onwukwe (Apiti Uzo-Ubi), a distinguished leader and the Director-General of The Mazi Organization (TMO), confirmed and reiterated the steadfast commitment of APP leader Dr. Chima Mathew Amadi, for his guidance and exceptional leadership that is shaping the party into a potent electoral force.
