The Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) has denounced the assassination of one of its personnel, Oladipupo Akinola, who was shot during a regulatory operation in Wuse II.
In a declaration signed by Kingsley Madaki, media assistant to the AMAC Chairman, the council characterized the event as a “premeditated murder” that transpired in plain sight on 24 April 2026 at NITEL Junction.
As per the declaration, Akinola, an officer in the Mobile Advert Permit Department, was part of a team inspecting vehicles with expired operational permissions when they halted a Hilux vehicle associated with a Chinese company.
The council noted that the scenario escalated after two individuals clad in Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) uniforms arrived at the site.
“Rather than de-escalating the situation, they became confrontational,” the declaration stated.
“One of them discharged a firearm at close range, fatally wounding Mr. Akinola instantly.”
AMAC claimed that the assailants also threatened bystanders, confiscated the impounded vehicle, and escaped.
In response, the council’s leadership remarked, “We will not be cowed by the threat of a firearm.”
It urged the NSCDC to promptly identify those involved, querying: “Are these your personnel or are they hired mercenaries in your attire?”
The council indicated that the matter has been reported to law enforcement and demanded a “prompt, transparent, and comprehensive investigation.”
It further noted that authorities are investigating any connection between the Chinese company and the armed individuals.
“No entity, whether foreign or domestic, exists above the laws of the Federal Capital Territory,” the declaration asserted.
Labeling the occurrence as “a grim day for Abuja,” AMAC stated that the assassination of a public servant while executing official responsibilities constitutes an affront to the state itself.
The council also conveyed condolences to the bereaved family, honoring Akinola as “a champion of the grassroots.”
“His dedication shall not be in vain. Justice must be expedited. Justice must be apparent. Justice must be rendered,” the declaration concluded.
