“Effective Communication: The Cornerstone of Government Success – Insights from Lai Mohammed”

Previous Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has stressed how tactical communication was utilized during his administration to advance Nigeria’s culture and tourism, reestablishing these domains as essential catalysts for national progress.

Mohammed expressed these thoughts on Wednesday while presenting copies of his book, Headlines & Soundbites: Media Moments that Defined an Administration, to the University of Ilorin in Kwara State.

He clarified that the Ministry intentionally harnessed communication to highlight Nigeria’s cultural assets and tourism capabilities at the forefront of both national and global conversations.

Routine official activities, he mentioned, were converted into impactful media occasions by participating in major festivals and visiting important tourist attractions with teams of journalists, creating lasting visibility for Nigeria’s cultural treasures.

According to Alhaji Mohammed, this approach magnified festivals like the Argungu International Fishing Festival, the Osun-Osogbo Festival, and the Calabar Carnival, transforming them into venues for economic promotion, national pride, and global narrative.

The former Minister remarked that excursions to cultural and tourism sites, including the Owu Waterfalls in Kwara State, as well as places like the National Theatre, Lagos, and the National Museum, Onikan, were meticulously planned to exhibit Nigeria’s tourism potential.

He added that the establishment of the National Festival Calendar introduced organization and predictability to cultural events, rendering them more appealing to tourists and investors.

On the international stage, Alhaji Mohammed underscored Nigeria’s involvement in the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, which showcased the country’s culture to a worldwide audience and reinforced the message that Nigeria’s genuine wealth resides in its citizens, traditions, and creativity.

“These initiatives illustrate how intentional and ongoing communication can transform culture into a formidable tool for economic diversification and national identity,” he stated.

He mentioned that he authored Headlines and Soundbites to maintain a precise historical record and provide context often absent from public discussions, underlining that no government thrives without efficient communication and no history is entire until narrated by those who experienced it.

He extended his gratitude to the administration of the University of Ilorin for accepting the books and expressed hope that the volume would enhance scholarship and bolster critical thinking among students.
