The United States division of the Nigerians in Diaspora Monitoring Group, NDMG-USA, has warned of potential legal measures against a U.S. legislator, Kimberly Daniels, regarding statements implicating the Sultan of Sokoto in Nigeria’s security dilemma and demanding the dismissal of the minister of state for defense, Bello Matawalle.
A communiqué released on Saturday and endorsed by Cosmas Collins, the group’s president in the U.S., referred to the remarks as “profoundly insulting, unfounded, and diplomatically irresponsible,” cautioning that it would commence legal action in the United States if the legislator does not withdraw her assertions.
Daniels, a Democratic representative of the Florida House from District 14, had recently urged President Bola Tinubu to discharge Matawalle while also making accusations linking the Sultan of Sokoto to insecurity in northern Nigeria.
In response, Collins expressed that the organization was particularly distressed by what it termed a “direct and unwarranted assault” on the Sultan, emphasizing that the esteemed traditional leader plays a pivotal role in fostering peace and religious harmony throughout Nigeria.
“The Sultan of Sokoto embodies unity and moral leadership, whose voice has consistently been utilized in support of peace, dialogue, and national unity. To suggest involvement in insecurity without credible support is not only defamatory but also an insult to countless Nigerians who honor the institution he represents,” Collins articulated.
He further mentioned that the group views the allegation as detrimental to Nigeria’s reputation and capable of igniting unwarranted unrest both domestically and internationally.
“These assertions are erroneous, harmful, and intolerable. We stand ready to pursue all legal avenues within the United States to seek redress if a complete retraction and apology are not forthcoming,” he stated.
Collins remarked that while the global concern regarding insecurity in Nigeria is justifiable, public commentary, particularly from foreign officials, must be firmly based on facts and a proper comprehension of the nation’s complexities.
“Security issues in Nigeria are intricate and necessitate cooperation, not sensational claims that misrepresent realities and target esteemed institutions. The Sultan has consistently been a proponent of peace and conflict resolution, and such contributions must not be distorted for political agendas.”
The organization encouraged foreign legislators to practice caution and prioritize constructive interactions over public allegations.
“We urge international partners to approach Nigeria’s domestic challenges with dignity, precision, and a commitment to truth. Misrepresentation of significant national figures does not facilitate solutions,” he asserted.
NDMG-USA reiterated its dedication to upholding Nigeria’s image internationally and fostering responsible global discussions regarding the country’s security landscape.
