An Uber chauffeur has been detained after reportedly fleeing with an iPhone 16 entrusted to him for transport in Lagos.
The occurrence became known after an X user, recognized as Ashake (handle: #Molayoo_), raised a distress call on Saturday, revealing particulars of the delivery request and tagging the ride-hailing firm.
As per her account, the driver picked up the gadget in Egbeda for delivery to Ikeja but canceled the journey halfway and became unreachable.
“Uber, one of your drivers in Lagos, Nigeria, collected a package (an iPhone 16) from Egbeda to be delivered to Ikeja, then he canceled the ride midway, and now he’s been uncontactable ever since! His name is Augustine Adimabua. This is someone’s business, for goodness’ sake! We need the package,” she expressed.
The situation escalated when the driver was located at his home.
Providing a progress report on Thursday, Ashake revealed that the suspect had been captured and turned over to the authorities. She further alleged that the phone, valued at over N1 million, had been sold for N400,000.
“He has been apprehended and taken to the appropriate authorities. Thanks to every single one of you who contributed to making this happen. He sold an iPhone 16 worth over 1m for just 400k,” she noted.
In a video circulating on the internet, the driver acknowledged receiving the device, stating, “I admit he gave me an iPhone 16, 256GB, valued at 1.2 million naira.”
However, when probed about its location, he asserted that the phone had been stolen.
“The phone was taken,” he responded to repeated questions.
The interaction became heated, with those confronting him accusing him of deceit, while a woman identified as his spouse looked visibly stunned.
The incident has since gained traction on social media, eliciting responses from users who shared comparable experiences with missing deliveries and denounced the alleged wrongdoing.
