Channels Television presenter, Seun Okinbaloye, has declared he is “not intimidated” by Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.
Wike had claimed he would have “smashed his TV screen and shot” Okinbaloye, in response to his statements that a single-party system would undermine democracy in Nigeria.
The minister’s comments have garnered extensive backlash, with Amnesty International accusing him of employing “irresponsible and aggressive language.”
However, Okinbaloye on Sunday reaffirmed his stance and asserted that violent expressions have no place in a democracy.
He stated: “The reality is that our democracy is at risk if we permit unilateral voting.
“This is not a caution to the opposition or the ruling party. It is a message to all Nigerians who are committed to our nation’s progress.
“I received a call from the esteemed minister, who explained that the intent was misinterpreted.
“While that is acknowledged, it remains crucial that violent speech or threats are never suitable reactions to dissent in a democratic environment.
“Let me be clear: I am not intimidated and will never succumb to pressure.
“We may have differing opinions and as humans, we can make mistakes, but disagreement must never escalate into aggression or damage.
“I will persist in doing what I cherish, posing the essential inquiries and holding authority accountable.”
