The Edo State Police Command has indicted a 64-year-old individual, Mr Enabulele Sampson, in court for his failure to produce a suspect he guaranteed as a surety.
NAIJATAB reports that the Public Relations Officer of the Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, made this known in a statement provided to journalists on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, in Benin City.
Ikoedem indicated that Enabulele Sampson served as a surety for one Ajayi Patrick, who was charged with bigamy.
The statement mentioned, “On March 12, 2026, the Aideyan Police Division received a report of alleged bigamy involving Mr Ajayi Patrick, who was said to be entering into a marriage at the Federal Marriage Registry on March 14, 2026, despite an existing marital relationship.
“In response to a distress call received on that date, police officers were swiftly mobilized to the location by the DPO.
“During the initial interview, the complainant, one Igho Joy of No. 156, Upper Mission Extension, was asked to provide documented evidence, specifically the marriage certificate of the alleged existing marriage, to support the claim of bigamy.
“While the investigation was in the process of establishing a prima facie case of bigamy, the accused, Mr Ajayi Patrick, was granted bail with an adequate surety following standard police procedure.
“The surety, one Mr Enabulele Sampson, aged 64 years, was given explicit instructions to ensure the suspect appeared at the station on March 17, 2026.
“However, the surety neglected to comply with the bail conditions as instructed and has consequently been apprehended.”
According to the statement, further investigation has disclosed that the suspect has fled to Canada in an attempt to avoid investigation.
The Command has engaged international police (INTERPOL) for assistance in locating and capturing the absconding suspect.
The statement further informed that the surety, having neglected his legal responsibility to produce the suspect as stipulated under the bail conditions, is being brought before a competent court to explain why the bail bond should not be forfeited.
Meanwhile, the Command has cleared the Divisional Police Officer, Aideyan Division, CSP Adesuwa Omoruyi, of any involvement in relation to the matter.
Ikoedem expressed the Command’s position while addressing accusations of misconduct and facilitating the suspect’s escape, made against the DPO of Aideyan Division by a group known as ‘Freedom Ambassadors Organisation’.
She stated that the group accused the police officer of corrupt practices, collusion, and assisting a suspect in evading justice.
The Command characterized the allegations as untrue, misleading, and not representative of the actual sequence of events.
“The Edo State Police Command stresses that at no time did its officers act beyond the limits of the law. All actions taken were in strict adherence to established legal protocols and professional policing standards, as the offence of bigamy is bailable.
“The Command therefore calls on members of the public to disregard these baseless allegations and avoid disseminating misinformation that could undermine public trust in the Edo State Police Command.
“The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, Monday Agbonika, reassured the public of the Command’s steadfast dedication to transparency, accountability, and the thorough prosecution of all cases presented before it,” the spokesperson stated.
