The lawmaker for Niger South Senatorial District, Sen Peter Jiya, has transitioned from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Senator Jiya’s notice of transition was announced by Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during the start of the plenary on Tuesday.
The notice stated: “I was previously affiliated with the PDP, which was my endorsing party.
“However today, I have terminated my affiliation with the PDP. This choice stems from the persistent disputes and considerable rifts within the party.
“Moreover, please be informed that effective today, I have opted to join and connect with the All Progressives Congress, APC, to further my political journey.”
The senator conveyed deep appreciation to his previous party, PDP, for granting him the chance to contribute to the nation and society.
“I remain thankful and wish the party success in the time to come, especially if it can address its internal issues,” he remarked.
With Jiya’s transition, the current arrangement of senators in the senate by party affiliation is: APC, 90; ADC, nine; PDP, four; APGA, one; and NDC, one.
New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, and Accord each hold one senator, bringing the total to 106 senators, with three positions unoccupied due to the passing of their previous occupants.
