Nasarawa State Police Command has initiated a search for those responsible for a lethal communal assault in Udege Development Area of Nasarawa Local Government Area, which resulted in at least 11 fatalities and numerous homes damaged.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, visited the impacted communities of Akyawa and Udege Kasa on Friday, April 3, where he expressed condolences to victims and evaluated the extent of the devastation.
The assault, which took place in the early hours of that same day, was allegedly executed by suspected miscreants in what officials characterized as a revenge for the purported murder of two individuals.
Throughout the turmoil, approximately 50 residences were engulfed in flames in Akyawa, while two additional properties were ruined in Udege Kasa.
Describing the occurrence as tragic, the police commissioner extended his sympathies to grieving families and assured residents that those accountable would face justice.
“We are profoundly troubled by this unfortunate event that resulted in the loss of innocent lives and the destruction of property.
“The Command is determined to ensure that the offenders are identified, apprehended, and held accountable,” he stated.
In the aftermath of the assault, the CP mandated the prompt deployment of tactical units and investigative teams to locate those implicated.
He also instructed for an increased security presence in the region, with police collaborating alongside the military and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to restore order.
During a stakeholders’ assembly convened in the community, Mohammed encouraged residents to maintain peace and assist security agencies with pertinent information that could facilitate ongoing investigations.
The police officials further indicated that normality has since been regained, noting that preventive measures have been established to avert a recurrence of turmoil in the affected neighborhoods.
