
The Nasarawa State Police Command has initiated a search for those responsible for a lethal communal assault in the Udege Development Area of Nasarawa Local Government Area, which resulted in a minimum of 11 casualties and numerous properties damaged.
The state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, visited the impacted regions of Akyawa and Udege Kasa on Friday, April 3, where he expressed condolences to the victims and evaluated the extent of the devastation.
The incident, which transpired in the early hours of that same day, was allegedly executed by suspected miscreants in what officials characterized as retaliation for the claimed murder of two individuals.
During the chaos, around 50 structures were set ablaze in Akyawa, whereas two additional buildings were ruined in Udege Kasa.
Labeling the event as tragic, the police commissioner expressed his condolences to the mourning families and assured the public that those accountable will face justice.
“We are profoundly distressed by this unfortunate event that resulted in the loss of innocent lives and devastation of property.
“The Command is devoted to ensuring that the offenders are recognized, apprehended, and prosecuted,” he remarked.
In the aftermath of the attack, the CP mandated the prompt deployment of tactical teams and investigative units to locate those involved.
He also instructed to enhance security in the region, with police collaborating with military personnel and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to restore peace.
During a stakeholders’ conference held within the community, Mohammed encouraged residents to maintain tranquility and assist security forces with pertinent information that may be beneficial to current inquiries.
The police authorities additionally reported that calm has since been reinstated, noting that proactive strategies have been implemented to avert a repetition of violence in the affected neighborhoods.
