“Seven Sentenced in Taraba: The Crackdown on Illegal Mining Takes a Stand”

The Taraba State Mobile Court on Environmental Protection, Public Safety, and the Prohibition of Deforestation on Tuesday sentenced seven individuals to imprisonment for participating in illicit mining activities.

The verdicts, obtained under Executive Order No. 5 of 2023, highlight the state government’s renewed commitment to confront the escalating issue of unauthorized mining and its extensive ramifications.

The culprits were apprehended at an illicit mining site in Sabon Gida, close to Karekare Village in Ardo Kola Local Government Area. Their apprehension was executed by operatives of the State Taskforce on Environmental Protection and the Prohibition of Illegal Mining, a unit established to implement environmental statutes and mitigate unlawful actions.

Illicit mining has emerged as a significant worry in the state, with authorities associating it with environmental deterioration, financial losses, and security issues.

Unregulated mining activities have led to deforestation, soil degradation, and water contamination, posing substantial threats to the livelihoods of local populations.

Executive Order No. 5 of 2023 was initiated to tackle these challenges by targeting individuals and groups exploiting the state’s mineral assets without permission or consideration for host communities.

Officials stated that the convictions are part of a more extensive enforcement strategy aimed at dismantling unlawful mining operations and reinstating environmental order. The mobile court, established to guarantee prompt justice, has been essential in prosecuting offenders and reinforcing adherence to environmental regulations.

Authorities expressed confidence that the sentences would act as a deterrent to others involved in illegal mining throughout the state.

They also urged community members to support ongoing initiatives by reporting suspicious mining activities and adhering to environmental protection laws, emphasizing that community collaboration is crucial for preserving natural resources for future generations.
