
A Kano State High Court overseen by Justice Adam Abdullahi on Tuesday condemned four armed thieves, identified as Shafi’u Abubakar, Usman Suleiman, Usman Sa’idu, and Ali Isa, to 10 years of imprisonment along with a penalty of N10,000.
The accused were charged on three counts, including criminal conspiracy and armed theft, which are punishable under Sections 97 and 298(c) of the Penal Code.
The offenders, all inhabitants of Rijiyar Lemo, Kano, colluded to engage in armed theft within residential properties situated at Sabon Garin Doka and Bankaura communities in Ungogo LGA.
The first charge states that on 22nd July 2024, between 3:00 and 4:00 a.m., the accused, equipped with lethal weapons, penetrated the homes of Abdullahi Musa (Bankaura Quarters, Ungogo LGA) and Mansur Muazu (Sabon Garin Doka, Ungogo LGA), assaulted them, and took away valuables. This action constitutes an offense punishable under Section 97 of the Penal Code.
The second charge indicates that on the same date at approximately 3:00 a.m., the accused assaulted and robbed Abdullahi Musa at his residence in Bankaura Quarters, Ungogo LGA. Stolen items included one Infinix phone valued at N50,000, one Tecno keypad phone worth N5,000,
a Lifan motorcycle valued at N700,000, and cash totaling N800. This offense is punishable under Section 298(c) of the Penal Code.
The third charge states that at around 4:00 a.m. on 22nd July, 2024, the accused assaulted and robbed Mansur Muazu at his residence in Sabon Garin Doka, Ungogo LGA. They took cash totaling N201,000 and the equivalent of 500 CFA.
This offense is also punishable under Section 298(c) of the Penal Code.
To establish the case beyond a reasonable doubt, the prosecution attorney, Barrister Ibrahim Garba Arif, called two witnesses.
Conversely, the defendants, represented by defense attorney, Barrister Basira Yunus, altered their plea from “not guilty” to “guilty.”
The court conducted a summary trial of the defendants, found them guilty on all three charges, and sentenced them to 10 years of imprisonment with a fine of N10,000 for each count.
The Court mandated that the sentences will be served concurrently, commencing from the date of their arrest, which was on 22nd of July, 2024.
