“Secrets of Love: Seun Kuti Reveals His Mother’s Unconventional Relationships”

Rebellious artist, Seun Kuti has asserted that his father, the late Afrobeat innovator, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, did not prevent his wives from engaging in relationships with other men.

He further asserted that this was one of Fela’s significant errors, alleging that some of the women ultimately acquired HIV from their partners and transmitted it to the late musician.

Talking during a recent Instagram livestream, Kuti mentioned that contrary to the rumors suggesting that Fela was the one who infected his women with the disease, he was actually the one impacted.

He stated, “Fela made numerous errors. One of the blunders he committed – one day, I viewed a video of a woman online questioning why people honor Fela’s legacy given that he transmitted HIV to women and succumbed to AIDS.

“I remarked, ‘Oh, Fela do you recognize yourself?’ If Fela had been a conventional man, he would still be alive. I will share something about him that you might not be aware of, Fela’s women all had relationships with other men.

“Fela did not confine his women to himself. He believed that as he was free to engage with all the women, they were also free to associate with other men. His rule was that they should not bring their partners to his residence.

“My father doesn’t step out of his home to engage with other women externally, so it was his women who introduced HIV into the household. No one is infallible. Everyone makes errors. But Fela is a man who stands with humanity.”

NAIJATAB remembers that Fela garnered attention when he wed 27 women in a single traditional event on February 20, 1978, in Lagos.
