“Rising Unrest in Ibadan: Oyo Government’s Coronation of APC Gubernatorial Hopeful Alli Sparks Controversy”

Tension is currently escalating in Ibadan, Oyo State due to the decision by the Oyo State government to appoint one of the gubernatorial contenders from the All Progressives Congress, APC, Sharafadeen Alli as a beaded crown wearing Oba in Ibadanland.

NAIJATAB reports that the initiative to appoint Alli, who presently represents the Oyo South Senatorial District at the National Assembly, was made public on Thursday.

Our correspondent reveals that the proposal was communicated through a letter signed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ademola Ojo.

Ojo’s letter, dated 26 March 2026 and directed to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, indicated that the coronation is long overdue.

Individuals earmarked for installation as Obas include High Chief Alli, High Chief Akeem Bolaji Adewoyin, and High Chief Kola Babalola.

Ojo reiterated that the coronation ceremony is set for April 3, 2026, adding that the event will occur at Mapo Hall.

NAIJATAB, however, has discovered that unrest has blanketed certain areas of Ibadan in response to this announcement, as the matter has become a topic of conversation, particularly among the political elite.

Different organizations and individuals examining the scenario suggest that the forthcoming coronation could be a positive change or a political retaliation.

While some view it as an attempt to hinder Alli’s gubernatorial aspirations, others maintain that the coronation will not negatively impact his ambitions.

An Ibadan resident, who requested anonymity, pointed out that the current legislation does not prevent Alli from pursuing the governorship even if he becomes a beaded crown wearing Oba.

He stated, “It’s a legal matter. The law doesn’t prevent him from seeking the governorship. He could even decline the beaded crown. Did you know that the existing Olubadan initially turned down the crown? It was only when he was prepared to assume the role of Olubadan that he accepted it.”
