Jigawa to Celebrate 1906 Anti-Colonial Uprising with a Vibrant Two-Day Festival

The inhabitants of Hadejia in Jigawa State are preparing to celebrate their significant defiance against colonial dominance with a two-day ceremony scheduled for April 24 to 25 in Hadejia town.

The Chairman of the Organising Committee and Galadiman Hadejia, Alhaji Usman Abdul’aziz, revealed this during a press briefing.

He noted that the celebration is focused on fostering bravery, reinforcing principles, and safeguarding the rich cultural legacy of the Hadejia community.

As he stated, the occasion is anchored in a significant confrontation in 1906, which resulted in the deaths of over 800 Hadejia fighters, including the then emir, Alhaji Muhammad Mai Shahada. He mentioned that British troops also incurred losses during the skirmish, including their commanding officer.

Abdul’aziz also detailed the events planned for the occasion, including guided tours to important historical locations and the launch of a book that offers an in-depth account of the event. The work was penned by the late Professor Haruna Wakili in collaboration with other historians.
