Easter Appeal: CAN Calls on Government to Address Niger’s Struggles with Hardship and Insecurity

The Niger State division of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has implored both the federal and state administrations to undertake prompt measures to alleviate the difficulties encountered by citizens and effectively confront the ongoing insecurity in the region.

In an Easter communication titled ‘Be Hopeful, Be Resilient, Be Compassionate’, the state Chairman of CAN, Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, urged Christians to embody the essence of the season by offering love and assistance to the disadvantaged, including widows, orphans, and the vulnerable.

Yohanna, who also holds the position of Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, characterized Easter as the jubilant peak of the Lenten period characterized by prayer, fasting, and charitable giving. He remarked that the festivity represents hope, renewal, and God’s unwavering love for humanity.

The cleric conveyed his alarm regarding the deteriorating socio-economic landscape and insecurity in Niger State, which he noted have resulted in the loss of lives, the displacement of communities, and interruptions to agricultural endeavors.

“We urge the Federal and State Authorities to utilize all within their capabilities to alleviate the hardships of the citizens and terminate the insecurity that has devastated our territory,” he stated.

The religious leader also appealed to residents to remain diligent in prayer for the peace, unity, and advancement of the state, as well as for divine direction for leaders, particularly Governor Umaru Bago.

“Let us pray that God bestows upon him the grace and wisdom to energetically pursue and realize the ‘New Niger Agenda,’ and that existing projects are finished for the benefit of all,” he added.

Looking towards the 2027 general elections, Yohanna motivated citizens, especially Christians, to engage actively in the democratic process by participating in voting. He also encouraged the state governance to maintain an inclusive governance approach.

The Niger State CAN chairman concluded by urging Christians to exemplify the principles of love, mercy, compassion, and selfless service, as a mirror of the resurrected Christ.
