Nigerian Juju Music Legend Y.K. Ajao Passes Away: A Melodic Legacy Remembered

Renowned Nigerian juju artist Yekini Kolawole Ajao, famously referred to as Y.K Ajao, has passed away.

The announcement of his passing was shared in a message on musician Shina Peters’ Instagram account on Friday evening.

“It’s still hard to accept, you weren’t merely a companion, you were like a brother. Prof Y.K Ajao, your music, your essence, your aura; unforgettable.

“I appreciate everything. I will cherish the memories eternally.

“Rest peacefully, my brother. Your legacy endures, your melodies continue, and you will always be remembered,” the message stated.

Yekini Ajao turned professional in 1973 when he established his own ensemble, ‘Y.K. Ajao & His Professional Brothers Band’.

His musical genre originated in the juju tradition, but he innovated a unique sub-genre known as ‘Juju Makossa’.
