President John Mahama has emphasized the significance of Nigeria’s stability to Ghana’s security and economic welfare, cautioning that difficulties in Africa’s most populous country could instigate migration pressures throughout the subregion.
Mahama delivered these remarks at the African Heritage Awards 2026, where he emphasized the robust historical, cultural, and economic connections between Nigeria and Ghana.
He stated that Nigeria’s advancement is directly correlated with Ghana’s prosperity, remarking that instability in the nation could have ripple effects on smaller neighboring countries.
“Nigeria is of great security significance to us. If Nigeria thrives, Ghana thrives,” Mahama articulated.
“I mean, when you have relatives, 250 million of them, you desire for them to succeed so that one million of them don’t come drifting toward a small nation like Ghana,” he added, noting that the scale of Nigeria’s population renders its stability a matter of regional importance.
Mahama additionally conveyed personal concern regarding Nigeria’s situation, mentioning that he frequently contemplates the nation’s challenges and aspires for betterment.
He further highlighted enduring ancestral and migration connections between the two nations, particularly ties between Ghanaian communities and the Yoruba ethnic groups in southwestern Nigeria.
The former Ghanaian leader remarked that these shared origins strengthen the profound relationship between both countries and stress the necessity for ongoing stability in Nigeria.
His comments occur amid increasing worries across West Africa about insecurity, economic strains, and migration patterns, with regional leaders continually emphasizing Nigeria’s pivotal role in sustaining equilibrium and prosperity within the subregion.
