“Breaking Free: Liya’s Bold Departure from DMW Label”

Nigerian vocalist, Abdulsalam Suliyat Modasola, widely recognized as Liya, has disclosed that her choice to depart from Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) label was motivated by a pursuit for personal and professional advancement.

Liya, who became the inaugural female artist to be signed to Davido’s label in October 2020, officially severed ties with the label in 2023.

During an interview on the program Wahala with Josy Anne, the vocalist revealed that her tenure at the label was fraught with emotional difficulties that significantly impacted her wellbeing.

She noted that the time was characterized by feelings of depression, fatigue, and health concerns, which ultimately compelled her to make the tough choice to walk away.

“Why did I depart? I simply sought more for myself, both as an individual and as an artist.

“It was unfortunate, it was disheartening, I was exhausted, I was unwell, but it was a choice that I needed to make for my own sake,” Liya stated.

The vocalist also tackled the public backlash she encountered while associated with the label, remarking that many individuals misconstrued her circumstances and labeled her as unproductive.

“They labeled me with terms like lazy, saying she has no clue what she’s doing. They’re just throwing money at her, and she’s accomplishing nothing,” she mentioned.

Liya additionally disclosed that the obstacles she encountered during that time influenced her activity on social media.

She clarified that she did not personally oversee her Instagram account for over two years, delegating the task to her manager.

In spite of the hardships, the vocalist expressed appreciation to her manager for his understanding and support throughout that timeframe.

“He was weary, but I’m so thankful he comprehended. He never pressured or compelled me,” she added.

Liya gained acclaim after joining DMW in 2020 and unveiling tracks such as “Melo,” “Adua,” and “Lakiriboto.”
