The Kano State administration has disbursed N7.4m to households impacted by the 2025 assault in Uromi, Edo State, fulfilling a commitment made by Governor Abba Yusuf.
The funds were presented at the residence of the district leader of Bunkure.
Addressing on behalf of the governor, the Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Waiya, stated that the assistance is intended to alleviate the distress of families who lost relatives and those who were injured.
He clarified that 16 families of the deceased received N300,000 each, while 13 survivors were allocated N200,000 each. Provisions, including two bags of rice per individual, were also distributed.
Waiya mentioned that the governor took action upon realizing the previous promise had not been executed. “We are here to honor the commitment made by His Excellency during his visit to express condolences to the families,” he stated.
He characterized the event as tragic, emphasizing that 16 individuals lost their lives and 13 others were harmed when a mob assailed them as they returned to the North.
The commissioner added that initiatives are underway to ensure that compensation pledged by the Edo State administration is delivered. He disclosed that a dedicated account has been opened for this purpose.
“We are optimistic that the compensation will be disbursed soon,” Waiya affirmed, reassuring families that both administrations are collaborating to assist them and seek justice.
He encouraged the families of the victims to remain patient, vowing continued aid from the government.
The district head of Bunkure, Alhaji Aminu Umar, expressed gratitude to the government for honoring its commitment and prayed for tranquility in the state.
Most of the victims were hunters from Kano who were assaulted in Uromi after being misidentified as kidnappers while traveling home for Sallah.
