Travelers on the Abuja–Kaduna railway corridor have recounted their experiences following Monday’s train incident that resulted in multiple injuries and left numerous individuals stranded.
NAIJATAB reports that the event, which transpired near Asham on the Abuja–Kaduna path, wounded at least 22 individuals, who have since been transported to healthcare facilities for assistance.
In the aftermath of the incident, rail operations on the corridor were momentarily halted, with efforts currently underway to reinstate standard services.
Several travelers, who communicated with NAN on Tuesday in Kaduna, mentioned that the ordeal was terrifying and emphasized the necessity for preventive strategies to prevent a recurrence.
Mr. Ibrahim Musa, a passenger on the affected train, characterized the moment of collision as abrupt and chaotic.
“We experienced a strong jolt from behind, and individuals began to scream. It was disorienting because many of us initially believed it was a crash with another train,” he stated.
Musa urged the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to emphasize routine technical evaluations, especially during locomotive coupling.
“They should meticulously verify all connections prior to departure. Such incidents can be averted if sufficient care is taken,” he added.
Another passenger, Mrs. Grace Daniel, expressed that the event incited fear among travelers, particularly those seated in the rear carriage, where most of the injuries were reported.
“Some travelers tumbled over one another during the impact. It was alarming, especially for children and older individuals on board,” she remarked.
Daniel called upon the NRC to enhance communication with passengers during crises and ensure that safety briefings are conducted before departure.
“We must be informed about safety protocols. This will assist individuals in remaining calm if anything goes amiss,” she stated.
An official of the Nigerian Railway Corporation in Kaduna, who requested anonymity, mentioned that initial observations indicated a coupling problem involving a backup locomotive attached to the train.
The official clarified that the incident was not a head-on collision between two trains but rather involved the rear locomotive colliding with the power car and the last passenger carriage.
“What transpired was a technical issue during the connection of a backup engine. Investigations are in progress to identify the precise cause and to avert future incidents,” the official noted.
He assured travelers that the corporation is implementing measures to enhance safety protocols, including reviewing operational processes and strengthening staff training.
