“Governor Bala Mohammed Sounds the Alarm on Dismantling Rail Infrastructure in Bauchi”

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has voiced apprehension regarding the removal of railway sleepers along the Alkaleri–Tafawa Balewa rail corridor, labeling the situation as alarming and potentially damaging to the state’s economic interests.

The governor allegedly encountered contractors removing the sleepers on Saturday while en route to Alkaleri Local Government Area for a condolence visit.

Concerned by the operation, he urged relevant authorities and security forces to promptly intervene and provide clarity on the matter.

A visibly upset Mohammed questioned the rationale for dismantling the rail infrastructure, asserting that such essential national assets should not be interfered with without adequate consultation with the state government.

He promptly instructed his Chief of Staff to communicate with the Federal Ministry of Transport, seeking clarification, while expressing worry that vital infrastructure within the state was being dismantled without the awareness of state officials.

The governor pointed out that security personnel accompanying the contractors claimed they were following orders from the Federal Government.

Nevertheless, he insisted that the explanation was inadequate, given the significance of the rail line for the transportation and distribution of agricultural products in the affected regions.

Mohammed cautioned that the removal of the railway sleepers could exacerbate transportation issues and negatively impact economic activities in communities that depend on the rail corridor for the conveyance of goods.

He also emphasized the necessity for transparency and enhanced collaboration between federal and state entities, noting that decisions influencing critical infrastructure must take into account their economic consequences for local communities and livelihoods.

Subsequent inquiries later revealed that the contractors were reportedly operating under a letter from the Federal Government permitting the removal of the rail tracks, although no justification was given for this action.

Addressing residents of the affected areas, the governor assured them that he would pursue the issue in Abuja, reiterating that railway transportation remains one of the most effective and economical means of transporting goods and services for ordinary citizens.

Mohammed also questioned whether the Federal Government had abandoned plans to restore railway infrastructure across the nation, especially in the North-East, which he claimed continues to be underserved in terms of essential infrastructure.
