The 2026 National Sports Fiesta of the Unity Schools Alumni Association, USOSA, has concluded in Enugu, with the Federal Government College, FGC, Enugu emerging as the victors.
It led the standings with eight gold, three silver and two bronze medals.
FGC Ikot Ekpene Alumni Association secured the second position with seven gold, seven silver, and three bronze medals.
NAIJATAB reports that the intensely contested sports fiesta involved 30 Unity Schools from throughout the country.
The week-long sports festival, which took place at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, united alumni from federal unity colleges across the nation.
Events showcased at the fiesta included football, tug of war, march-past, swimming, lawn tennis, table tennis, snooker, ludo, draughts, badminton, volleyball, basketball, golf, among others.
FGC Ikot Ekpene, one of the fierce competitors, contended alongside 29 other schools in its effort to reclaim the trophy but ultimately finished in second place as FGC Enugu excelled in the medals tally.
After the tournament, the President-General of USOSA, Michael Magaji, remarked that the fiesta transcends mere competition, characterizing sports as an essential instrument for national unity and progress.
“We fully recognize the strength of sports as a bonding mechanism—one that unites individuals and encourages growth. This event in Enugu presents us with yet another opportunity to reinforce our connections, celebrate our variety, and demonstrate that we are exemplars of responsible citizenship,” he stated.
Magaji acknowledged that while the association is devoted to enhancing public education, sports act as an additional avenue to deepen partnerships and foster nation-building.
“Through this initiative, we aspire to create connections across the country and strengthen ties that, in many cases, span 30, 40, or even 50 years,” he added.
He underscored that USOSA’s initiatives are voluntary and designed to give back to the community, especially the public education sector that influenced its members.
According to him, the association is striving to reinstate the high standards that were once characteristic of unity schools.
“These institutions were once hubs of excellence, and while standards may have diminished over the years, our objective is to restore and even exceed those standards, one institution at a time,” he said.
