Former Vice President and leader of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Atiku Abubakar has condemned the recent Code of Conduct advisory issued by the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, labeling it as an effort to limit press freedom and stifle free expression in Nigeria.
Atiku expressed his views in a statement released via his official X account on Saturday.
The statement mentioned: “The Code of Conduct advisory issued by the National Broadcasting Commission represents yet another concerning effort to stifle the media and contract the space for free expression in Nigeria.
“Our media sector has evolved into a formidable institution, acknowledged globally for its perseverance and professionalism. It is therefore disconcerting that, each time elections draw near, the NBC resorts to heavy-handed directives that do more to suppress dissent than to promote ethical journalism.
“I stand resolutely with Nigeria’s broadcasting sector and all media platforms opposing this encroaching censorship.
“Let it be understood: ethical principles are not seasonal instruments to be weaponized during campaigns; they are enduring obligations.
“The timing and manner of these regulations reveal a deeper agenda. It indicates a government more focused on controlling narratives than allowing a free, fair, and transparent electoral process.”
The NBC had issued a notice indicating that broadcasters are expected to maintain neutrality and adhere to ethical standards at all times.
It cautioned that any anchor or presenter found expressing personal opinions as facts, bullying or intimidating guests, denying opposing views a fair hearing, compromising neutrality, or showing disrespect for human dignity would be seen as breaching broadcast regulations.
