“From Buju to Fresh Notes: The Story Behind the Name Change That Rocked the Music Scene!”

American rapper Fat Joe has asserted that he and others influenced Nigerian singer, BNXN, previously recognized as Buju, to alter his stage moniker.

Fat Joe elaborated that they pressured the Nigerian performer into modifying his stage name because his prior name, Buju, was deemed disrespectful to Jamaican dancehall icon, Buju Banton.

The rapper revealed this during a podcast discussion featuring both himself and Buju Banton.

“There is a phony individual in Africa utilizing the Buju name, we ridiculed him on TV, silenced him, and he changed his name. I informed him there is solely one Buju Banton,” he remarked.

Buju Banton articulated that his stage name holds significance for him because it was bestowed by his mother, unlike many artists who either created their names or received them from peers.

He clarified that his mother named him Buju but he appended the suffix Banton in tribute to a Jamaican DJ he greatly respected.

“Most individuals [artists] derive their names from friends or invent them. But my name originated from my mom. Then I added Banton because of my admiration for Burr Banton,” he explained.

NAIJATAB notes that BNXN initially embarked on his music journey with the stage name “Buju” but subsequently modified it to his current name due to purported copyright concerns.
