Tragedy Strikes: Five Lives Lost in Katcha Highway Electrocution Event



A devastating electrocution event along the Kupafu–Essa village stretch of the Katcha roadway, in Niger State, has led to the fatalities of five individuals, leaving three more severely injured.

The event transpired on 20th April, 2026, at approximately 9:00am along the roadway.

The occurrence took place when a truck transporting crates of milk and passengers from Lagos to Kano faced a traffic blockade along the roadway.

It was reported that in a bid to circumvent the jam, the driver steered the vehicle into a nearby bush route.

During this maneuver, the passengers and the loaded truck allegedly came into contact with high-energy power lines, resulting in the electrocution of five individuals instantly, while three others endured varying levels of severe injuries.

Confirming the occurrence, the Niger State Police Command stated that the three injured individuals were swiftly taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Bida, for urgent care.

He revealed that the bodies of the five deceased were transported to the General Hospital, Badeggi, Katcha.

The Command further noted that the truck driver is presently evading capture, and efforts are underway to locate him for investigation.
