Inhabitants of Edikwu Ukpogo within the Apa Local Government Area of Benue State have abandoned the village after a sequence of assaults allegedly executed by suspected herdsmen.
The locals left behind their farms and additional means of sustenance, raising new apprehensions regarding safety and humanitarian conditions in the region.
Benue State has persistently encountered ongoing conflicts between agricultural communities and armed factions, frequently resulting in displacement and loss of life. Apa LGA is among the regions that have faced repeated security difficulties in recent years.
The once vibrant community of Edikwu Ukpogo is currently referred to by residents as abandoned.
Families reportedly escaped in terror following consecutive attacks, forsaking properties and farmlands essential for their survival.
The forced relocation has disrupted farming activities, exacerbating worries over food security and economic stability in the vicinity.
In response to the situation, a political figure, Hon. Adole Jose Ehoda, labeled the crisis as a humanitarian emergency, urging immediate intervention from the government and security forces.
He appealed to authorities to reestablish security, safeguard lives and property, and provide aid supplies for the displaced individuals.
Residents and observers have also voiced increasing discontent, questioning how long communities will stay defenseless without sufficient protection.
As displacement persists, focus is shifting towards the actions of security agencies.
