
A nighttime armed heist at student accommodations close to the Ekiti State University vicinity in Ado Ekiti has resulted in the detention of two suspects, while law enforcement officials persist in a pursuit for other accomplices who escaped from the site.
The occurrence took place in the early hours of Saturday in the Iworoko region of Ado Ekiti, where armed individuals reportedly invaded off-campus lodgings and stole personal belongings from students, prompting renewed concerns regarding safety in student housing areas.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ekiti State Command, Sunday Abutu, stated that the command received a distress signal around 2:30 am, leading to an immediate action from operatives of the Iworoko Police Division.
According to him, students reported that armed individuals had intruded into their lodgings and forcibly took away valuables, including mobile devices.
He noted that police operatives quickly mobilized to the scene and tracked the perpetrators to their hiding place shortly after the incident, resulting in the capture of two individuals, while others managed to flee.
The suspects were identified as Abdulraman Abdulmumini, 26, and Abdulsalam Oseni, 31.
Recovered items from them consist of an unregistered Bajaj motorcycle allegedly utilized in the crime, two stolen mobile devices, two MP digital radios, along with clothing and footwear believed to have been taken from victims.
Abutu further revealed that the suspects confessed to the offense during questioning and have also shared information about other gang members who are currently evading capture.
He added that the police have escalated efforts to apprehend the fleeing assailants and recover more stolen property associated with the heist.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, Michael Falade, has urged citizens to work collaboratively with security forces by providing timely and reliable information.
