Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, UNICAL, Prof Offiong Offiong has revealed that the institution is monitoring individuals involved in certificate forgery.
He made this statement while outlining activities for the 38th convocation ceremony of the institution commencing from 2nd April, 2026.
He stated that the offenders were utilizing computers to create the counterfeit certificates.
Offiong additionally revealed that certain individuals were soliciting financial incentives to grant admissions or job positions.
The VC encouraged everyone to inform the authorities about anyone who approaches them for financial favors.
Offiong remarked, “We are conscious of the ongoing dubious activities involving certificates produced in computer centers, and the wrongdoers are not only misusing the institution’s name, but also attempting to replicate the signatures of former Registrars and Vice Chancellors of our institution.
“We are closing in on a few individuals that have been identified, and when they are caught, we will not hesitate to expose these avowed adversaries to the public.”
He stated that his administration was discreetly tackling various issues “that have overshadowed our ability to shine brighter than it currently does.”
He also discussed numerous criminal issues that have led to unfavorable reporting about the school based on incidents that were confirmed to be accurate or factual.
He mentioned that they were already disciplining an officer of the institution who was implicated in admission racketeering and other misconduct.
He noted that the officer was undergoing disciplinary measures while the Central Admissions Committee (CAC) has been reinstated.
“Our admission process, recruitment methods, examination fees, certificate racketeering, and a few other vices have consistently portrayed us negatively in the eyes of the public.
“We are resolute in dedicating our efforts to confront these dreadful and harmful enduring practices that have undermined and attempted to diminish the standing of our esteemed and illustrious Institution.
“The officer under whose supervision the misconduct has persisted is currently facing disciplinary action,” he stated.
