Nigerian Government Responds to Jos Palm Sunday Tragedy: Unveiling Their Strategic Plan Forward

The Federal Government has voiced its deep concern regarding the unfortunate occurrence that transpired in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North on Palm Sunday.

The administration conveyed its condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the state authorities and residents of Plateau State.

“On behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government of Nigeria, I extend our heartfelt sympathies to the families of the deceased and to the state government and populace of Plateau State,” remarked the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday.

“I want to reassure Nigerians that security forces responded immediately to the situation. Troops under Operation Enduring Peace were promptly dispatched to the scene following urgent calls.

“The military and other law enforcement agencies secured the impacted area, established control over vital access routes, and commenced targeted search-and-clear operations to capture the offenders.

“These swift actions ensured that the situation was managed quickly and halted any further escalation,” the Minister noted.

The Minister mentioned that this response is a component of a comprehensive and ongoing Federal Government security strategy in Plateau State and the wider North-Central area.

He additionally indicated that the Nigerian Armed Forces have been actively engaged in clearance operations and intelligence-led missions in at-risk communities following recent assaults.

“Increased surveillance and troop deployments have also been implemented in high-risk zones, supported by combined military-police patrols and refined rapid response tactics. These synchronized efforts aim to proactively mitigate threats and maintain order,” he added.

“Just a few hours ago, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, convened a high-ranking meeting with the country’s top security and intelligence officials to evaluate the situation and decide on further decisive measures towards attaining a lasting resolution. Following this gathering, President Tinubu has invited the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, to participate in further discussions and formulate a coordinated plan for lasting peace and security,” he stated.

“These measures underscore the seriousness with which the Federal Government is addressing this matter and its steadfast commitment to ensuring that all necessary actions are carried out promptly and effectively.

“The Plateau State Government has also taken significant and complementary steps in conjunction with federal bodies. A 48-hour curfew was implemented in Jos North immediately following the incident to stabilize the security landscape and support ongoing operations. The state government continues to collaborate closely with law enforcement agencies to prevent retaliations, restore peace, and facilitate inquiries.

“Plateau State has historically encountered localized security issues stemming from communal conflicts and criminal behavior. The recent occurrences do not indicate a breakdown of national security but rather a criminal incident within a recognized conflict-prone area—one that is being actively and decisively addressed by the authorities.

“The Federal Government has directed all security agencies to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are identified, apprehended, and brought to justice.

“There will be no sanctuary for criminal elements anywhere in Nigeria. Ongoing operations are already yielding actionable intelligence, and we are confident that those accountable for this attack will face justice.”
