“ASUU Sets Countdown: Four Days for FG to Resolve Lecturer Salary Disputes!”

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has cautioned the Federal Government to commence compensating lecturers under the recently sanctioned remuneration framework without hesitation or face a nationwide strike.

The union announced a four-day ultimatum on Thursday. ASUU President Christopher Piwuna mentioned that if no measures are taken within that timeframe, the union will enact significant actions that could immobilize public universities throughout the nation.

Addressing an assembly at Sa’adu Zungur University in Bauchi State, Piwuna asserted that the government must initiate the disbursement of the new wages forthwith.

“We have set a four-day deadline effective today for the federal government to commence the payment of the newly sanctioned salary structure. Non-compliance will lead to a strong reaction from the union,” he stated.

He underscored that the union anticipates immediate action, cautioning that inaction will trigger a resolute response.

This alert follows a few months after ASUU and the federal government came to a new accord in January.

The arrangement was meant to tackle enduring challenges and put an end to the recurring strikes that have plagued Nigeria’s university system for numerous years.

A fundamental aspect of the agreement is a new compensation model aimed at enhancing lecturers’ welfare and addressing issues related to the 2009 treaty between ASUU and the government, which was never fully executed.
