The Edo State Police Command has verified the apprehension of all students engaged in a widely shared bullying and assault episode at Igbinedion Education Centre, following extensive public anger regarding the troubling footage.
Police spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, mentioned that the arrests followed a “thorough and meticulous inquiry.”
She emphasized that the individuals involved, all recognized as minors, will be brought before a Family Court in line with regulations surrounding juvenile justice and child safety.
In a related matter, the families of the impacted students, known as the Asoro and Uyi families, have extended official apologies for the incident.
According to law enforcement, the conflict stemmed from a prior disagreement involving two female students and one male student.
During the confrontation, the boy supposedly made an inflammatory comment about the girls’ deceased father, stating, “Ogun kill your papa.”
The remark reportedly incited an attack by the girls after school.
Authorities indicated that the situation intensified when a parent who arrived to collect her child tried to intervene.
“Fuming from the remark, the girls confronted the student after school hours. When a parent intervened, they turned their aggression towards her, physically engaging her and ripping her clothes,” the statement disclosed. The school administration later excluded the girls due to the incident.
The turmoil further escalated the following day when the son of the assaulted woman executed a retaliatory strike.
“The next day, the male student, whose mother had been attacked, confronted the victim depicted in the viral footage in what has been recognized as a vengeful act. The victim is the brother of the girls involved in the earlier altercation,” police remarked.
In response to the occurrence, Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika mandated a statewide reinforcement of the Operation Safe Schools Initiative to rectify security and oversight deficiencies in secondary institutions.
The command also declared the mobilization of its advocacy unit, the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices, POCACOV, to amplify awareness and reorientation initiatives for students and educational authorities to avert a future recurrence.
