Nigerian vocalist Chimamanda Pearl Chukwuma, widely recognized as Qing Madi, has stated that the music sector is as profitable as the “narcotics” trade.
In a recent segment of the Tea With Tay podcast, Madi mentioned that an artist can earn what the typical Nigerian worker makes in a year or more from a single performance.
The 19-year-old expressed that music has granted her financial independence, yet she refrains from showcasing her riches online since she prefers it not to define her image.
“Revenue from music is extraordinary, akin to drug proceeds. I don’t think people truly comprehend how… And I’m not someone who would purchase items and display them on social media because I believe it would alter how I am perceived publicly. I prefer not to have people view me solely as wealthy. However, I am affluent.
“The average Nigerian works from 9 to 5 and earns perhaps N500,000 by the end of the month, while as an artist, you can perform one show and receive N20 million. The earnings from music are immense,” she remarked.
Madi articulated her belief that the affection Nigerians have for music might stem from the scarce availability of therapy in the nation, emphasizing that many individuals lean on music for healing and diversion.
