“2027: Nigeria’s Vision for Justice – Tackling the Threat of Fake AI Content!”

A reporter and advocate for civil society, Abdullahi Haruna Haruspice, has urged the Nigerian authorities to criminalize the dissemination of misleading artificial intelligence (AI)-generated material in anticipation of the 2027 general elections.

He made this request during a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday.

Haruspice expressed significant alarm regarding what he characterized as the escalating and perilous exploitation of AI technologies to target Nigerian political figures and private citizens.

To address this issue, he urged the federal government and security organizations to take swift measures by outlawing the creation and distribution of such content, including “recognizing AI-generated extortion as a national security danger and categorizing it as a form of cyber-terrorism.”

“What was previously deemed science fiction has now evolved into a genuine and pressing threat to Nigeria’s democratic integrity, particularly as the country nears the 2027 general elections,” he remarked.

His remarks coincide with ongoing disputes involving the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Joash Amupitan, related to an alleged partisan communication shared on X. The post has ignited demands for his resignation.

Nonetheless, INEC, in a recent declaration, rejected the message as fabricated and false.
