A PDP leader and organizer of The Alternative, Otunba Segun Showunmi, has announced his plan to run for the 2027 Ogun governorship election in the state.
Showunmi made this announcement during a courtesy visit to the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) office in Abeokuta on Friday.
He asserted that the governance of Ogun cannot be entrusted to just one individual, urging opposition parties and political factions to form a grassroots coalition to contest what he referred to as the “missteps” of the prevailing political parties.
While recognizing that political parties are entitled to make choices, select, or support a consensus candidate, he asserted that such ambitions must not be imposed through an arrangement that deprives the electorate of genuine options.
He expressed, “I will be contesting for governor in the 2027 gubernatorial election. I am here to request that you establish a small committee among yourselves to figure out how we can work together to make this a reality.
“As we move toward the 2027 election cycle, the pivotal question is this: will Ogun State resign itself to a coronation, or will we, for the benefit of our children and future generations, permit a genuinely competitive process?” he inquired.
He recognized that Ogun West has historically been marginalized from producing a governor, referring to the region’s ambition as “entirely legitimate.”
“Ogun West’s more than 50-year exclusion from the governorship renders its ambition legitimate,” he stated, “but an ambition loses its meaning if there is no competition.”
The PDP leader championed a campaign focused on issues prior to the 2027 elections rather than “money politics.”
He presented himself as a genuine son of Ogun State with no history of violence, challenging other aspirants to engage in a public debate.
“I do not believe that the governorship of Ogun revolves around distributing rice or handing out money. I invite all aspirants, whether official or consensus candidates. Let us discuss the future of Ogun and what the next steps should be,” he said.
Earlier in the welcoming address, the Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, Ogun State Council, Comrade Abayomi Sanyaolu, welcomed Showunmi and urged chairpersons of all political parties to exercise prudence in selecting a leader, warning that the repercussions would return to haunt them.
Meanwhile, the Southwest Vice Chairman for Labour Party, Abayomi Arabambi, affirmed that the “state deserves better and is at a juncture where challenges must be tackled head-on.”
He urged the public to engage in the decision-making process regarding their future, calling for a partnership and coalition that would bring progress to the state.
