The Nigerian administration, via the Nigerian Communications Satellite, NIGCOMSAT, Limited, has declared that Nigeria is swiftly progressing in its engagement within the global space economy.
Mrs. Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen relayed this update during the Second Nigerian Satellite Week.
This occasion assembled industry pioneers and governmental entities in the country’s capital, which, as noted by the Director General, reaffirmed Nigeria’s unified commitment to harnessing the potential of space for national growth.
Under the theme “Utilizing Space for an Exceptional Nigeria,” Mrs. Egerton-Idehen highlighted that Nigeria’s choice to invest in the space economy represents not merely a technological milestone but also a declaration of Nigeria’s readiness to partake in and shape one of the most pivotal industries of the modern age.
“The global space economy is undergoing its most substantial transformation in decades, driven by the commercialization of Low Earth Orbit (LEO), the growth of satellite broadband, and the rising recognition that space-based infrastructure is vital for national competitiveness,” she stated.
“Nigeria has not remained idle during this change. We have proactively engaged, deliberately enhancing the technical capabilities, institutional frameworks, and innovation pipelines necessary to compete and lead.
“We are profoundly encouraged by the backing of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose approval of two additional satellites for NIGCOMSAT signifies a crucial moment for Nigeria’s space initiative and clearly demonstrates the Federal Government’s dedication to sovereign satellite capabilities as a catalyst for national advancement and economic competitiveness.
“As we endeavor to optimize the remaining operational lifespan of NigComSat-1R and establish the groundwork for the satellites that will come next, we do so with the confidence that arises from understanding our journey and the support gained from knowing we are not alone in this endeavor.”
