
A public affairs analyst, Mahdi Shehu, has expressed new worries regarding the management of security in Nigeria, characterizing it as a framework that serves only a select few while the broader populace continues to endure hardships.
In a message posted on X on Thursday, Shehu indicated that the interval from 2015 to 2023 revealed alarming truths about the handling of security finances in the nation.
He stated, “security is a collective concern because it impacts everyone either favorably or unfavorably.”
Additionally, he emphasized that the domain has turned into a lucrative enterprise for a limited group.
He observed that Nigerians were astonished by multiple revelations made during that timeframe by active military personnel and high-ranking government officials, which disclosed how funds allocated for security were reportedly misappropriated.
“However, Nigerians were astounded in an unbelievable manner between 2015 and 2023 with revelations from then serving military and high-ranking government officials,” he remarked.
He further noted that these disclosures exposed the arsenal of disgrace and recounted to Nigerians how security funds were being misused, misallocated, and/or pilfered, compromising public safety.
Shehu referred to accounts and public statements from prominent security figures, including former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai; former National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno; and the late Chief of Army Staff, Ibrahim Attahiru.
“Just remember the statements made by General Tukur Buratai before the Senate committee, those from former NSA Monguno and the public disclosures from the late General Attahiru COAS,” he remarked.
He asserted that the insights from these officials shed light on the nation’s enduring security dilemmas, despite substantial expenditures on defense.
“Nigeria is a truly fascinating nation. The more you learn, the better you comprehend why we find ourselves in our current situation,” Shehu added.
