Cody Rhodes commenced wrestling under the guidance of his father, Dusty Rhodes, who established the organization when Cody was merely 12 years old. This, however, was limited to solo matches and confrontations. He received training from Al Snow, Danny Davis, Randy Orton, and Ricky Morton during this time. In May 2006, Rhodes made his debut in Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) utilizing his real name, Cody Runnels. Pat Buck marked his first victory at an OVW Live Event on May 13 in Corridon, Indiana. By mid-August 2006, The Runnels formed a tag team with Shawn Spears and swiftly became embroiled in a rivalry with The Untouchables for the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship. They secured their first win against The Untouchables on October 18.
Runnels and Spears emerged victorious over The Untouchables in a tag team tournament in November 2006, gaining director Cherry’s program from The Untouchables. Cherry joined the arena alongside Spears and Runnels, and soon Spears developed feelings for her, leading to interference in their matches.
On November 29, they lost the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship by a tie against The Untouchables and Runnels and Spears. Both teams would face off again the following week for the Vienna Championship. During this period, Cherry teamed up with Spears and Runnels to form The Untouchables and aided in reclaiming the OVW Southern Tag Team Title. On December 20, two weeks later, Runnels and Spears secured a second-round victory against Deuce ‘n Domino.
