“Amnesty International Alleges DSS is Silencing Dissent Against US and Israel”

Amnesty International has urged Nigerian officials to promptly halt what it termed as an escalating suppression of individuals who voice criticisms against the administrations of the United States and Israel.

In a declaration issued on Friday, the advocacy group expressed deep concern regarding the conduct of the Department of State Services (DSS), particularly concerning the treatment of those sharing viewpoints on social media regarding the ongoing strife in the Middle East.

As per Amnesty’s findings, this predicament has already resulted in the apprehension of at least two individuals in Kaduna.

“At least two individuals, both inhabitants of Kaduna, have been apprehended, and one of them is reportedly enduring what seems to be a fraudulent trial based on dubious charges,” the group stated.

Amnesty International also disclosed that it had obtained reports suggesting that several other Nigerians who publicly denounced the policies of the United States and Israel were invited or summoned by the DSS for interrogation.

The organisation cautioned that such actions could undermine respect for human rights and erode public confidence in governmental institutions.

“These progressively authoritarian behaviors compromise fundamental rights and diminish trust in the impartiality of state entities, whilst also fostering an atmosphere of dread,” the statement emphasized.

Amnesty asserted that questioning the actions or policies of any administration is an integral aspect of the fundamental right to freedom of expression and should never be regarded as a criminal act.

“Challenging the policies of any government or its leaders constitutes a legitimate exercise of the right to freedom of expression,” the group remarked, emphasizing that this right is safeguarded under Nigeria’s Constitution as well as international human rights treaties.

The organization specifically referenced the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and international instruments such as the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which safeguard citizens’ rights to express opinions and share ideas without fear of retribution.

Amnesty International consequently urged Nigerian officials to terminate what it described as the rising oppression of individuals who are peacefully exercising their rights.

“Nigerian leaders must halt assaults and repression against people who are merely exercising their human rights in a tranquil manner,” the organization stated.

It further cautioned that targeting individuals for criticizing the policies of the United States or Israel could convey a perilous message that peaceful dissent is not tolerated within the nation.

“Targeting individuals for criticizing the governments of the United States or Israel conveys a chilling message that peaceful dissent is unwelcome in Nigeria,” the statement concluded.

The organization wrapped up by imploring Nigerian officials to ensure that every individual in the country can enjoy their rights without apprehension.

“The authorities must respect and safeguard the human rights of all citizens in Nigeria, including the right to freedom of expression both digitally and offline,” Amnesty emphasized.

They encouraged the government to abstain from actions that could silence dissenters.
