The national leader of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, David Mark, has cautioned that Nigeria is veering towards a single-party system, accusing the All Progressives Congress, APC, of undermining opposition parties and democratic institutions in the nation.
Addressing the National Opposition Summit on Saturday in Ibadan, Mark asserted that current political events are intended to curtail Nigerians’ capacity to freely elect their leaders and solidify authority within a singular dominant party framework.
He indicated that opposition parties have endured persistent pressure in recent years, warning that such patterns could jeopardize democratic equilibrium if left unchecked.
Mark also expressed apprehensions regarding electoral integrity, asserting that public trust in the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has diminished due to perceived bias.
He urged opposition parties to focus on unity and collaboration, emphasizing that no individual party can successfully confront what he characterized as a deeply rooted political system.
According to him, the opposition ought to transcend personal ambitions and collaborate to protect democratic processes and guarantee trustworthy elections.
Mark cautioned that the existing political trajectory could have enduring consequences for Nigeria’s democratic framework if remedial actions are not implemented.
