The Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, together with the general manager of the State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA), Kehinde Bello, on Tuesday visited Our Lady of Apostle Primary School in Ijebu-Ode following a suspected chemical spillage in the region.
Recall that last week Wednesday, an unusual chemical odor was detected in the school grounds, shortly after the assembly session
resulting in difficulties for many students and staff to breathe.
This led to the hospitalization of 30 students and two teachers at the State General Hospital, Ijebu Ode.
According to the Vice Principal, Mrs. Adeola Borogun, several students began to vomit and lose consciousness, prompting the school management to request ambulances.
In response to the situation, Governor Dapo Abiodun directed an immediate closure and comprehensive investigation to uncover the details surrounding the event.
NAIJATAB reports that Tuesday’s visit was part of the state government’s initiative to evaluate the circumstances and ensure the safety of students, staff, and residents in the affected area.
During the inspection, Kehinde Bello also toured a neighboring institution, Sacred Heart Catholic College, to assess the consequences of the occurrence and reassure the school authorities of the government’s prompt action.
The OGEPA leader subsequently proceeded to the State Hospital in Ijebu-Ode, where some students affected by the suspected chemical leak are currently undergoing medical care.
The State government, through OGEPA, assured residents and school authorities that the investigations were ongoing and that appropriate measures would be implemented to protect public health and avert a recurrence of such events.
