In anticipation of the 2027 general election, former governors from the South-East region have voiced robust support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Their choice is based on the Tinubu administration’s infrastructural advancements throughout the area.
NAIJATAB reports that the former governors expressed this stance on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, subsequent to the official launch of the Forum of South-East Former Governors, an entity created to assist and advise current governors in the area on essential regional and national matters.
As stated in a communiqué released after their meeting and presented by the former governor of Ebonyi State and Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, the forum is conceived as a non-partisan platform available to all former governors of South-East states, irrespective of political preferences.
Members observed that although several former governors could not attend the inaugural meeting due to health issues and other obligations, they expressed optimism that over 90 percent participation would be realized in future assemblies.
The forum praised the current South-East governors for what it called “extraordinary progress” in infrastructure development, security, and empowerment programs across the region.
Specifically, the former governors lauded President Tinubu for what they described as an “infrastructure renaissance” in the South-East, as well as for appointing numerous individuals from the region to significant positions within his administration.
They also recognized the Federal Government’s assistance to state governments nationwide, emphasizing that such support has played a crucial role in the accomplishments noted by governors in the South-East.
The forum further proclaimed that governors in the region stand united in their backing for President Tinubu’s re-election, characterizing this move as a “strategic and visionary decision.”
In its next steps, the body disclosed plans to engage directly with serving governors in the South-East, including a planned courtesy visit to update them on the objectives of the forum and seek areas for collaboration.
They affirmed their dedication to continue fostering development efforts in the region and to enhance public awareness concerning the initiatives of both state and Federal Governments.
“The South East Forum of Former Governors is hereby established today, the 7th of April 2026. The goal of this organization is to support the serving governors of the South East and counsel them on critical regional and national issues.
“The forum will be accessible to all former governors, regardless of party loyalty, who have served in the South East.
