A 14-year-old high school student has been fatally injured by a stray bullet in Maiduguri, Borno State, in an event that has incited anger and rekindled worries over the improper use of firearms by security forces.
The unfortunate occurrence took place on Saturday, 4 April, when the individual was allegedly hit within her residence at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) quarters. The bullet was reportedly discharged by military personnel involved in celebratory gunfire at a nearby wedding celebration.
A family associate, who wished to remain unnamed, recounted the victim’s last moments as both normal and tragic.
“She resided in the UMTH quarters with her relatives and was inside her dwelling when the calamity transpired. She had just completed applying henna for her mother and herself, happily getting ready for a family wedding set for that same day,” the individual disclosed.
The young girl was later pronounced dead, with her interment conducted on Sunday morning at the Maiduguri cemetery in accordance with Islamic traditions.
The event has provoked denunciation from Amnesty International, which urged Nigerian officials to perform a comprehensive and independent inquiry into the conditions surrounding the shooting.
In a statement, the organization emphasized the necessity for accountability and preventative measures.
“There must be a clear, impartial, and effective investigation into this event to protect lives and ensure justice,” Amnesty International asserted.
At the time of compiling this report, there has been no formal statement from the military officials concerning the incident.
Family members and community residents have persistently sought answers, labeling the death as preventable and urging the government to implement decisive measures to avert a recurrence.
