The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has implemented some modifications to the updated schedule and timing of activities for the 2027 general election.
INEC reached this conclusion after its meeting with political parties on Tuesday, 24th March 2026, during which concerns were expressed regarding the timeline for the submission of political parties’ member registers under the revised schedule for the general election, initially set for 1st April 2026 to 21st April 2026.
The Commission, during the mentioned meeting, decided to extend the period for the submission of the political parties’ Registers of Members to comply with the 21 days mandated by Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act, 2026, in accordance with the actual dates determined by the political parties themselves.
“Political parties are hereby notified that they are permitted to establish the dates of their primaries within the sanctioned timeframe from the 23rd of April 2026 to the 30th of May 2026. It is crucial that parties comply with this timeline to guarantee a seamless electoral process,” a statement endorsed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna,
National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee said, “The register of party members must be presented to INEC no later than 21 days prior to the occurrence of their respective primaries.
“This indicates that the final deadline for the submission of political parties’ member registers has been extended to the 10th of May 2026, from the 21st of April 2026 as originally outlined in the revised Timetable.”
