“2027 Election: Labour Party Shifts Presidential Ticket to Southern Leadership”

The Labour Party has stated that it will not accept any presidential candidate from the northern region of the country, affirming that the position has been designated to the South.

Speaking to reporters following a meeting between the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and political figures on Tuesday, the interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, Nenadi Usman, mentioned that the party will not plead with anyone to run on its platform.

Peter Obi and Dati Baba Ahmed represented the presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the Labour Party in 2023; however, Obi has since departed the party for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

At this moment, it remains uncertain who will carry the party’s presidential banner in the upcoming election.

“Well, it entirely relies on anyone who wishes to utilize the Labour Party, because we cannot go out and implore individuals, please come and use the Labour Party to compete in elections.

“That’s simply not how it’s done. It’s up to future candidates who desire to utilize the Labour Party to step forward. However, we have made one definite resolution, which is to declare that we will absolutely not field any candidate from northern Nigeria.

“We have allocated the position to southern Nigeria. Therefore, if any individual from the North attempts to run now, we will undoubtedly reject that.

“But regarding who that will be, I cannot disclose that at this time, for then it wouldn’t be democratic anymore. We are meant to have and exercise internal democracy. Thus, in light of the internal democracy we seek to practice and uphold, we will not be able to reveal that now.

“When the candidates present themselves, whoever the people favor and vote for during the primaries will then become the winner of the primaries.”
